September Begins…I think I’ll go fly
Today was my second lesson and my first in September. Thankfully it went much better than my first. I am picking up how to turn smoothly and how to also ascend and descend. I took out another Cessna 172 today, this one however seemed much older than the first. For example, instead of an electric flap control, this plane had a manual flap control bar like a parking break.
Today’s lesson involved the following:
- More detailed checklist walk-through
- Taxiing (Driving the plane to the runway)
- Turns
- Ascends
- Descends
- Turns with ascends and descends
- Flap Control
I’d say my favorite part of today had to of been when James had me run through multiple turns. This also gave me some much needed practice on these. It was also pretty exciting to run through turns while ascending or descending. I’m getting a much better understanding of it all.
One big thing I realized today is that I need to start waking up earlier to get to work on flight days so that I can get out to the airport earlier in the day. Otherwise I’m getting home (and so is James) so darn late.
Things to Ponder:
- How the flaps are useful and how they work
- Go over and get a good feel for the “Pitch, Throttle, Trim”
- Pre-flight, flight, post-flight checklists – get a good understanding of what to check
Things to Study:
- Basics of an Airplane
- System Section (Engine and Instruments)

'Sounds like you got a chance to fly my old fav – 08Y. Or "old blue" as they used to call her. It's been like 15 years since I've flown her but imagine she's still the same old girl.
One thing to note re: 08Y, the elevator bell crank has longer arms then you will find on a later Cessna 172. This translates into lighter pitch control resistance but you you have move the control farther to effect the same degree of pitch as you would in a later model 172.
Jason….Gill……..flying?! …i think ill go alert Homeland security….
