    Yesterday I accomplished one of the more important aspects of flying…landing!

    I did my first landing yesterday and it went surprisingly well.  Though James had his hands and feet near the controls, the majority of the landing was done all by me.  I’m pretty excited about how it went and found it to be much easier than I imagined.  I figure this is due to the “power off” stall that James had me practicing.  Though I’m still not a great pilot, I feel that I’m really coming into my own with this whole flying thing.

    I’m definitely understanding the controls much more and finding it to be much easier to adjust my ailerons and throttle when needed.  The Cessna I’m flying has electronic flaps, and this is one area I need to focus on a bit more since I tend to keep the flaps going either out or in.  I should have practiced drumming more so I could use one hand to do one deal, the other to do another, and my feet to control something completely different.

    Other than my first, this flight has to be my favorite so far since I’m finally seeing my training all come together.  I’ve done a couple take offs now and those are going pretty smooth minus the taxiing on the runway and keeping a steady speed when pitching up.  Those skills I still need to practice.

    Ground school yesterday was pretty relaxed as we just went over a few more components of maneuvers and went over landing a bit.  All in all, it was a great lesson and I am so excited for the next (Tuesday, September 21st) as I’m getting more practice with landing!

      Hi Jason, congratulations on “Landing”, one of the many FUN milestones/achievements. I also fly and have 600 hours in Cessna, Piper, and Mooneys. I’m working on my CFI raiting at this point.

      I’m sure that blogging about this will reinforce what your learning while entertaining and educating others… it forces you to think about what you’re writing, and creates a journal of the whole process. Great idea.

      You have a nice website and I found you because of your note on Chris Guillebeau’s website. How did you design this website? Is it a template? You even show your logbook stats.. that’s cool.

      Right now I make a living marketing the game of chess to people with many different interests. I played chess a lot as a youth, and today I like to bring the fun and delight of chess to homes throughout the world. It’s a fun business <a href="http://(www.chesshouse.com)” target=”_blank”>(www.chesshouse.com) but my first love is flying, and I’m privileged to be able to fly as well.

      I noticed you are in Oregon. I recently flew to Sun River with my wife and visited a great air museum in that state. We are from Washington.
